Extra Innings: Drama and Determination on Center Stage October 10th, 2025
Tied late into the game, every pitch felt magnified. The Mariners’ relievers and every available pitcher in the dugout were ready, hoping for an inning or two. in the top of the 6th, Detroit’s Kerry Carpenter blasted a go-ahead home run, but fans never gave in. We had too much invested to give up. after four hours and 57 minutes, nearly every pitcher on both teams had been used.
The Seattle Sports Team Tax-
The Seattle sports “emotional tax” is a well-worn currency for local fans, a unique blend of a fan base that has been through the huge emotional cost of Seattle FanDom. The loss of the Supersonics, Mariners 116 win season and swept by the Yankees. Pete Carroll deciding to call a pass play on the one yardline! We start to feel like we deserve what we get, right or wrong its a feeling we share. For all the heartaches, Teams relocating and let downs, we deserve a huge win and some emotional tax refund. The Mariners and The Detroit Tigers game 5 was finally when we got what we deserved!
Why Seattle has the best fans of anywhere in the USA-
The Mariners and Tigers battled fiercely, each extra inning offering a chance for victory or defeat. In the bottom of the 15th, a 75-year-old woman wearing a 1995 Ken Griffey Jr. jersey turned to our row, her eyes glistening with tears and her voice trembling from cheering. She said, “This is it, boys—I’ve waited 50 years for this moment, and it ends now!” With the bases loaded, I braced myself for another heartbreaking Seattle moment. Then it happened—Jorge Polanco smashed a single past the second baseman, and the stadium erupted in wild celebration. In 25 years, I have never witnessed a celebration like this: all 47,025 fans in attendance and across Seattle finally released decades of hope and longing as crowds poured into the streets. Inside the park, a ten-minute standing ovation honored a game like no other. The woman in front of us turned back, tears streaming down her face, and I realized how extraordinary this moment was. Watching a father lift his five-year-old son onto his shoulders to join the celebration reminded me why baseball matters: it brings us together. We were not just cheering for the Mariners; we were celebrating our dedication, love, and city pride, and at that moment, we got what we deserved. I will never forget that night and get goosebumps and teary eyes just speaking about it. Thank you to all the fans, players, and everyone involved in making one of the greatest memories of my life.
